21 980 new COVID-19 cases recorded, 616 deaths in last 24-hour cycle

South Africa has reported another record number of cases in the last 24-hour cycle. 21 980 new coronavirus infections have been recorded, taking the total number to 1 192 570.

The country has also recorded 616 new COVID-19 related fatalities on Friday.

In a statement, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says most of the new deaths were recorded in the Eastern Cape.

“Regrettably, we report 616 more COVID-19 related deaths: 215 from Eastern Cape, 27 from the Free State, 75 from Gauteng, 72 from KwaZulu-Natal, 11 from Limpopo, 11 from Mpumalanga, 55  from North West, 4 from Northern Cape and 146 from the Western Cape,” says Dr Mkhize.  This brings the total number of deaths to 32 425.

Recoveries currently stand at 947 919.

The cumulative number of tests conducted to date is 7 043 680.
