21 832 new COVID-19 cases recorded, 844 deaths in last 24-hour cycle

South Africa has reported another record number of cases in the last 24-hour cycle. 21 832 new coronavirus infections have been recorded, taking the total number to 1 149 591.

The country has also recorded 844 new COVID-19 related fatalities on Wednesday.

In a statement, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says most of the new deaths were recorded in the Eastern Cape.

“Regrettably, we report 844 more COVID-19 related deaths: 452 from Eastern Cape, 12 from the Free State, 96 from Gauteng, 65 from KwaZulu-Natal, 11 from Limpopo, 8 from Mpumalanga, 46  from North West, 5 from Northern Cape and 149 from the Western Cape,” says Dr Mkhize.  This brings the total number of deaths to 31 368.

Recoveries currently stand at 929 239.

The cumulative number of tests conducted to date is 6 898 207.
