The IEC says it has so far registered 183 political parties ahead of the 2014 general elections, but 133 of them will contest the polls.
Western Cape has 25 parties followed by Gauteng with seven.

The last few months have seen the emergence of new political parties including the Economic Freedom Fighters and Dr Mamphela Ramphele’s AGANG party.

IEC Chief Electoral Officer Mosotho Moepya says they are continuing to register political parties.

“It is important to point out that the registration of political parties is work that we do any day of the week. Parties can be registered anytime of the week and they can register either in the national sphere of government and municipalities were they operate.”
Meanwhile, IEC chairperson Pansy Tlakulu says they hope to reach two million new voters through their registration campaign.

The president is yet to announce the date of the elections.
