18 000 new COVID-19 cases recorded, 436 deaths in last 24-hour cycle

South Africa has reported another record number of cases in the last 24-hour cycle. 18 000 new coronavirus infections have been recorded, taking the total number to 1 057 161. The country has also recorded 436 new COVID-19 related fatalities on Thursday.

In a statement, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says most of the new deaths were recorded in the Western Cape.

“Regrettably, we report 436 more COVID-19 related deaths: 57 from Eastern Cape, 1 from the Free State, 84 from Gauteng, 116 from KwaZulu-Natal, 20 from Limpopo, 4 from Mpumalanga, 4 from Northern Cape and 150 from the Western Cape,” says Dr Mkhize.  This brings the total number of deaths to 28 469.

Recoveries currently stand at 879 671.

The cumulative number of tests conducted to date is 6 609 208.
