18 000 athletes expected in Nelson Mandela Marathon

Organisers of the Nelson Mandela Marathon say it is all systems go for this year’s race. More than 18 000 athletes are expected to run 42 kilometre race between Pietermaritzburg and the Mandela Capture site at Howick in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands.

Some international athletes will also participate. Entries for the race will be open to the public until the end of July.

Addressing the media at the launch in Howick, Umgungundlovu Mayor Thobekile Maphumulo has called on the public to take full advantage of the event.

“It is history that the venue for this launch is just next to the site where Madiba was captured. Little did they know that the capture meant that the political history of this history is being re-written. It was the beginning of a long walk to freedom. The Mandela Day Marathon signifies the very profound history which we will forever be a legacy for generations to come.”
