A 13-year-old boy has drowned in the Kleinmond lagoon in the Overstrand Municipality in the Western Cape.

National Sea Rescue Institute spokesperson Craig Lambinon says rescue swimmers from Hermanus were dispatched late Saturday afternoon after reports of a teenager disappearing underwater.

“On arrival on scene no sign of the 13-year-old was found. It is believed that he was part of group of school children from Hermanus on a school outing. And he had apparently jumped off the bridge we believe to assist a friend that got into difficulty, when he got into difficulty himself and disappeared under water. Two NSRI rescue swimmers entered the water to conduct their search. They located and recovered the body of the child.”
