12 EC officials due in court over fraud charges

Twelve Mnquma municipal officials implicated in the alleged fraudulent awarding of four tenders amounting to R37 million are expected to appear in the Butterworth magistrate’s court in the Eastern Cape.

Hawks spokesperson, Captain Anelisa Feni says the officials were arrested Tuesday morning and are facing a number of charges including money laundering, fraud and contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act.

“From six O’clock in the morning we began a process of charging them these 12 officials are accused of fraudulently awarding four tenders for the Mnquma municipality. Three of these tenders were awarded to two companies which allegedly belonged to a businessman who is now deceased and one tender was awarded to one businessman whose case is now on trial.”
