1 735 new COVID-19 cases recorded in SA

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases has reported 1 735 new COVID-19 infections in the country in the last 24-hours on Saturday.

This takes the total number of cases to 3 683 172. The increase represents a 5.8% positivity rate.

26 more people have succumbed to COVID-19 related complications, taking the death toll now to 99 543.

First COVID-19 case detected in SA 2 years ago 

Saturday 5th March 2022 also marks exactly two years since the first COVID-19 case was detected in SA. The patient was a 38-year-old male who had travelled to Italy with his wife.

Amid growing calls to end the state of disaster, Health Minister Dr Joe Phaahla says his department has been working to come up with new regulations to replace it. He says the department is now ready to present its proposals to the cabinet and the National Coronavirus Command Council.
