1 291 new coronavirus cases recorded in SA on Tuesday

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has reported 1 291 new COVID-19 cases in South Africa, bringing the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 3 733 919.

This increase equates to a 5.6% increase in positivity. The majority of new cases on Tuesday came from Gauteng province (46%), followed by the Western Cape (21%).

In a statement, the institute says there may be a backlog of COVID-19 mortality cases reported due to the ongoing audit exercise by the National Department of Health.

“Today, the National Department of Health reports 18 deaths, and of these, two occurred in the past 24 – 48 hours. This brings the total fatalities to 100 116 to date.”

24 094 335 tests have been conducted in both the public and private sectors.
