Tutu honoured for raising cancer awareness
|
May 04, 2008, 13:00
Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu has again called upon all men, young and old, to do regular medical check-ups so that they may discover earlier if they have prostate cancer.
Tutu was speaking at a gala function in Washington, where he was honoured by the George Washington University with the Cancer Compassion Award for his role in highlighting the disease.
It is estimated that 27 million people around the world might suffer with cancer by 2030.
Tutu, himself a survivor of prostate cancer, says he is not sure if he had done enough to highlight the disease in South Africa. But the George Washington University honoured him for his role in improving access to care among poor communities.
