George W. Bush, the US president, has arrived in Pakistan on the latest leg of his regional tour by urging Pervez Musharraf, the Pakistani president, to do more in the war on terrorism.
Bush arrived in Islamabad yesterday, a day after a suicide car bomber killed an American diplomat and two other people outside the US consulate in the southern city of Karachi. Activists used kites and baloons as part of their protest against his visit.
While in India, Bush agreed to provide Pakistan's rival with American know-how for its civilian nuclear programme. US officials have said the United States will not be concluding a similar deal with Pakistan, which is still under a cloud because of the role of its top atom scientist, Abdul Qadeer Khan, in a nuclear proliferation scandal.
However, Bush is expected to expand trade ties to help Musharraf show the benefits of good relations with the world's superpower. - Reuters
