Platinum Stars are the inaugural champions of the Eastern Cape Premiers Cup soccer tournament after beating SuperSport United 4-3 on penalties. This is one of the off-season tournaments used by Premier Soccer League (PSL) clubs to test their new signings. In the first semifinal Platinum Stars came back from behind to beat Bloemfontein Celtic 2-1.
In the other semifinal SuperSport United were too good for first division side Bay United, beating them 2-0. Both United and Stars showed some tiredness, having to play two games within a short space of time, and the wet conditions did not help either.
There was no score at half-time. Both sides tried to find the back of the net during regulation time but it was not to be, and the game had to be decided on penalties.
United managed to convert three penalties and missed twice. On the other hand, Stars only missed one spot kick. Joel Luphahla converted the final penalty to win the trophy for Stars.
