Chiefs hold their own against mighty Man United

Kaizer Chiefs and Manchester United match

Chiefs put up a brave performance against a United side with some of its star players

July 19, 2008, 17:00

Kaizer Chiefs have held the English and European Champions, Manchester United, to a 1-1 draw in a Vodacom challenge match played at Newlands Stadium today.

Chiefs put up a brave performance against a United side with some of its star players. The Red devils made their intentions known in the early stages of the encounter. Gary Neville's attempt at goal in the second minute was cleared for a corner. Chiefs' defence was equal to the task with Jonathan Quartey clearing on a number of occasions. David Mathebula's cheeky shot at goal in the fourth minute showed that the Amakhosi were not just going to add numbers.

Chiefs won a penalty in the 35th minute after Simphiwe Tshabalala was fouled in the box. Quartey sent United's keeper Thomas Kuzscak the wrong way to score the opener. United played with more verve, throwing everything into attack. Chiefs keeper Itumeleng Khune made some brilliant saves to deny the visitors an equaliser. Chiefs led 1-0 at half-time.

United started the second half like a house on fire. They applied pressure on Chiefs' defence with Carlos Tevez's header going wide. Minutes later Chris Eagles scored for United to make the score 1-1. From then on it was end to end action as both sides looked for the winning goal. But it was not to be as they both wasted chances.

United face Orlando Pirates in Durban on Tuesday.
