Transport Minister Jeff Radebe
|
May 13, 2008, 18:15
Transport Minister Jeff Radebe says the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa will proceed without any transportation hiccups.
Radebe, accompanied by the CEO of the 2010 Local Organising Committee (LOC), Danny Jordaan, Gauteng MEC for Transport Ignatius Jacobs and Johannesburg mayor Amos Masondo, inspected transport sites in Johannesburg today. One of them is the R420-million N17 Nasrec Link between Soweto and Soccer City. Radebe says the world governing football body has nothing to worry about because South Africa will deliver on transport.
The Nasrec Link creates a better access route to Soweto from the N1. It links two key 2010 venues - Soccer City and the Orlando Stadium - and is expected to be completed by December next year.
The Doornfontein Station, which is just 200m from the Ellis Park Stadium, is getting a face lift, and so is the Joubert Park bus way, which will cater for people going to the northern suburbs.
Radebe also announced a new transport plan which will be unveiled to FIFA and LOC board members in June. The plan aims to link all the 2010 venues across the country. To ensure the smooth running of all the transport projects, government has deployed an official to the 2010 LOC office.
