Kaizer Chiefs are the kings of the Soweto derby for the year 2008. Amakhosi beat arch rivals Orlando Pirates by 1-0 in their Absa Premiership match played in Mafikeng today. Chiefs are now sixth on the log and are undefeated in the Soweto Derby in six seasons.
Out of the running for the Premiership title, the two Soweto Giants battled for a spot in the top eight. A wonderful interchange by Excellent Walaza and Teko Modise exposed Chiefs` defence early in the match. It was not one way traffic though as Amakhosi put in challenges of their own.
In the 37th minute, David Mathebula broke the deadlock after Shaun Barlett exposed the Buccaneers' left flank. In the second stanza Chiefs picked up where they left off camping in Pirates` half.
The buccaneers were desperate for an equaliser and it showed with tackles coming in thick and fast. Referee Charl Theron was compelled to dish out four yellow cards in the match. Mlungisi Gumbi received his marching orders after receiving his second yellow of the match.
In the other match Golden Arrows and Black Leopards played to a 0-0 draw.
