Jomo Cosmos - once one of South Africa's top football clubs - could be playing in the lower division next season. Cosmos are in the relegation zone following one of their worst seasons in history.
Ezenkosi, as Cosmos are affectionately known, were sunk further into the relegation zone by the 0-1 loss to Sundowns yesterday. Cosmos are tied on 22 points with Black Leopards. Their clash next Wednesday should decide who will be relegated. Cosmos are 15th on the log, thanks to a better goal difference.
But they could still drop to the dreaded automatic relegation spot, if Leopards beat or tie Golden Arrows on Saturday.
The third team that could still be relegated is Thanda Royal Zulu. Royal Zulu are 14th with 24 points and three games remaining. They play title chasing Santos on Sunday.
Cosmos have scored only 13 goals this season, and yesterday's display from their strikers showed why the club is in trouble. Defensively they are sound but in attack they lack confidence.
Cosmos had two decent chances to score in the opening 45 minutes. Reneiliwe Letsholonyane made a mess of his opportunity in the fifth minute. Their poor finishing was summed up when substitute striker Geoffrey Massa miss-kicked, with the goal at his mercy. Cosmos assistant coach Colin Tlemo says they will play their remaining matches as if they were cup finals.
