Waterkloof Four in bid to reverse conviction

The so-called Waterkloof Four are to file an application for leave to appeal in the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein. This is after their appeal against their conviction and 12-year prison sentence for murder and assault was rejected by the Pretoria High Court yesterday.

Christoff Becker, Frikkie du Preez, Gert van Schalkwyk and Reinach Tiedt were sentenced in January 2007 for crimes they committed when they were still minors. In 2001 they assaulted an unknown man in Constantia Park, in Tshwane and then kicked, punched and stabbed to death a second man in Moreleta Park.

Their R10 000 bail has been extended under stricter conditions. The four have to report to the investigating officer twice a week and are not allowed to apply for any traveling documents.
