The City of Johannesburg has won the right to host the world's broadcasters for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The Nasrec precinct in Johannesburg will be transformed into a world class International Broadcast Centre over the next two years.
Johannesburg was among the country's three cities that bid for the right to be the nerve centre for all TV and radio operations during the tournament. Cape Town and Durban were the other two bidding cities.
More than R1 billion has been invested in the upgrading of the precinct. Nasrec is 420 hectares big and currently accommodates Soccer City, the Johannesburg Expo Centre and Crown Mines Golf Course.
The LOC is confident that the City is capable of hosting the broadcasting centre. It is said that 500 residential units and a four-star hotel will also be built.
The upgrading of the precinct is scheduled to start on May 3.
