The fate of Nelson Mandela Bay Metro as a venue for the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2009 is still undecided.
The Board of Directors of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee South Africa and a FIFA delegation led by Secretary General Jerome Valcke decided today to postpone their decision to its next meeting in April.
This was based on a detailed report compiled by the Organising Committee's Technical Team on the progress made in the stadium construction process. It's not only the stadium that needs to be ready before the cut off date on April 29 this year, but also the infrastructure of the city and the hospitality sector.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is the only brand new stadium among the five venues to host matches during next years Confederation Cup. Construction has fallen behind schedule despite assurances that it would be ready in record time. Despite the load shedding which has crippled the country in recent months, Eskom has given guarantees that there will be enough power at the venues for the Confederations Cup and the 2010 World Cup.
