Transport Minister Jeff Radebe says transport projects for the 2010 Soccer World Cup are well on track. Radebe was speaking at the ANC KwaZulu-Natal Transport Indaba in Durban.
He says the projects included improving public transport links and facilities, upgrading bus and rail infrastructure and systems, creating transport links with stadia, accommodation areas and airports.
Projects already in progress included the R321 million Khululani Corridor in the Eastern Cape and the R5 billion N1 and N2 toll highways in Polokwane and the Western Cape.
The Rea Vaya BRT system in Johannesburg cost R1.3 billion, the Public Transport Interchange in eThekwini cost R3.9 million and the BRT Networks in Tshwane cost R1.7 million. A scheme to improve Gauteng's freeways was also underway at a cost of R23 billion.
Radebe said the initial estimated amount of vehicles required for the World Cup were 60 trains, 500 luxury coaches and 10 000 minibus taxis. - Sapa
