Soccer enthusiasts in Tshwane were treated to a day of excitement as four of the provinces' top clubs showcased their talents.
Unlike the results from the African Cup of Nations, where Bafana Bafana were knocked out in the first round, all the fans at today's tournament enjoyed themselves. With the African cup of Nations in full swing and the premier league in recess, the Gauteng Challenge provided some much needed game time for the teams involved --Supersport United, Moroka Swallows, Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs.
Swallows, who bought five players during the transfer period, put their newly required charges to the test and were the first to score in the first match against SuperSport United, who wer however quick to pull one back -- with Ricardo Katza doing the trick with a free-kick. The teams were level after regulation play and they headed for the dreaded penalty kicks. And Swallows won it 4-3 on penalties.
Next up was the Kaizer Chiefs - Sundowns encounter, and Sundowns wasted no time in getting on to the scoreboard. With about 20 minutes left on the clock, Tinashe Nengomashe scored one for Amakhosi. Like the previous match, this one too went to the spot kicks. Brian Baloyi saved two penalties on the day -- and the side from Tshwane won the match by five goals to four.
