Bafana crashed out of the Afcon after the 1-1 draw against Senegal
|
February 01, 2008, 12:15
Bafana Bafana are coming back home after they bombed out of the African Cup of Nations in Ghana last night.
The South African squad played to a 1-1 draw against Senegal however, their draw was not enough to be safe. They needed at least four goals to stay in the tournament.
Bafana put up a much better performance this time than when they played in the 2006 Afcon Cup in Egypt but the squad lacked leadership at the back. This was evident when Aaron Mokoena miscalculated a defence splitting pass by Senegal that resulted in a goal.
Now, the focus will be on Angola who will represent southern Africa in the quarter-finals of the tournament. The Angolans will join Tunisia who are leaders of Group D.
Chances for 2010
It seems that Bafana Bafana have a mountain to climb before the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa. This after they failed to progress past the first round for a second successive time at Africa's soccer showpiece.
But it was an improved performance on the Egypt debacle two years ago. This time South Africa scored a goal in every match, securing two points.
