Sharks slipped from second to sixth in the standings
|
May 08, 2008, 18:45
Sharks coach Dick Muir remains optimistic that his side can make the Super14 semifinals. This is despite three consecutive losses that have seen them slip from second to sixth on the standings - with two rounds remaining.
Their latest defeat against the Crusaders has knocked the wind out of the sails of the once mighty Sharks. Though the wheels may have come off for the moment, the coach remains hopeful. The Sharks will have to pick up bonus points in both their remaining fixtures if they are going to stand a chance of going through. Even then, they have to rely on results going their way in matches between the other teams.
The team will also change slightly. Johann Ackermann will make his return to first class rugby just two months after retiring. He will start for Johann Muller, who is nursing a calf injury. Mathematically at least, the Sharks can leapfrog all but the Crusaders and still secure second place and a home semifinal.
While the Shark's coach is justifiably positive, he should send thank you cards to his counterparts at the Bulls and the Western Force after their charges beat opponents above the Sharks in the standings. Thanks to those results, the Sharks remain potential semifinal contenders as only five points cover second to sixth.
