The new Southern and Eastern Cape Super 14 Rugby Franchise will do their battle on the field under the banner of the Southern Spears. The Franchise was named in Port Elizabeth this morning.
This move is expected to provide a focused identity for the three regions making up the franchise, Eastern Province, South Western Districts and Border.
Tony McKeever, the franchise CEO, says the Southern Spears's colours will be red, black and white and the logo a spear bolt flashing through the name Spears. He says the name is not from the same mould as the other South African Super 14 teams, the Bulls, Cheetahs, Cats, Sharks and Stormers.
The Spears will play domestic rugby next season to build a team and consolidate, before showing their mettle in the Super 14 competition in 2007.
Peter De Villiers, the head coach, says he is satisfied with the way his players are shaping up as they were evaluated by SA Rugby's High performance testing team earlier this week. De Villiers will finalise his squad after trials at George next Friday. Their first match is a friendly against the Cheetah January 14 in Port Elizabeth.
