Mixed fortunes for SA golfers at BMW Open

May 22, 2008, 19:00

South African golfers had mixed fortunes in Wentworth, England, on the first day of the prestigious European tour event - the BMW Open.

Irishman Paul McGinley set the early pace, carding a first round of seven under par 65. South Africa's Charl Schwartzel is tied fourth on four under par. Anton Haig is at two under par in tied eighth position, while last week's winner, Hennie Otto, is at one under par.

McGinley played a faultless round carding seven birdies and no drop shots. He is 10 shots ahead of world number three, South Africa's Ernie Els, who had a miserable day on his home course with a three over par 75, which included three drop shots and one double drop shot.
