The Davis Cup tie between South Africa and Denmark, due to take place from July 18 -20 will be played at altitude, but on a slow surface. The South African Tennis Association will announce the venue in a few weeks time.
The last time South Africa hosted a Davis Cup tie was three years ago. South Africa have struggled to make their mark in the Davis Cup over the last couple of years. The CEO of Tennis South Africa, Ian Smith, says altitude will suit the South Africans - especially singles players Kevin Anderson and Rik de Voest, who grew up in Gauteng.
A fairly slow surface rules out grass, with carpet in an indoor arena perhaps the ideal surface for the tie. But there is so much to consider before finalising a venue. There is already sponsorship on board for the Euro/Africa Group Two clash. If South Africa beat Denmark, and after that Algeria or Monaco, they will be promoted to Group One, which is one group below the ultimate -- the world group.
