SA's Trevor Immelman
|
April 14, 2008, 16:30
Trevor Immelman, who became the second South African after Gary Player to win the US Masters golf tournament, has climbed 14 places on the latest world rankings and now occupies 15th place.
Immelman won his first major exactly 30 years after Player won the last of his three Masters titles at Augusta National. He is one of just five South Africans to have won a Grand Slam event -- the others along with Player are Bobby Locke, Ernie Els and Retief Goosen.
Somerset West-born Immelman has also pocketed R10.5 million for his efforts.
Meanwhile, the City of Cape Town has added its congratulations to Immelman. Mayoral committee member for economic development and tourism, Simon Grinrod, says Immelman has once again put the city on the world map. He says he intends to recommend a civic reception, hosted by the city, so Immelman can present his Green Masters winner’s jacket to his fellow Capetonians.
