Outcry is from Player’s company's links with the ruling junta in Burma

October 13, 2007, 16:45
Anglican Archbishop emeritus Desmond Tutu says he stands by his remarks over golfing icon Gary Player's company's links with the ruling junta in Burma. Tutu recently ruffled some feathers when he called on Nelson Mandela to distance himself from Player because of his ties with the junta in Myanmar.
The Nelson Mandela Children's Fund responded swiftly to Tutu's call by removing Player from the guest list for the Nelson Mandela Invitational Golf Tournament expected to take place in the Western Cape next month.
Asked if he was happy at the decision, Tutu said all he did was to raise the issue and to say there were decisions that have to be taken and people have taken those decisions. However, he says he is happy that there seems to be some sort of an agreement between him and Player. Tutu says he is glad that Player agrees with him about the awfulness of the Burma regime and that it ought to be changed.
Tutu was speaking after handing over dozens of soccer shirts to needy children from Cape Town's Du Noon's informal settlement. The consignment has been donated by an Australian
Good Samaritan. Tutu says he hopes this gesture will lure the kids away from the streets and drugs and give rise to a galaxy of soccer stars in future.
