Team South Africa scooped 24 medals
|
July 22, 2007, 18:15
Team South Africa had a field day on day 10 of the All Africa Games in Algeria scooping 24 medals. South Africa is currently third on the medals table, but with two more days to go the top position is still within their reach.
After cruising through their heats in the 400m hurdles - the only question that needed to be answered was in which order the South African trio would finish. By the time the three reached the back straight, the other five runners knew all three medals were heading down south.
L.J van Zyl took the lead with 50m to go and finished first, followed by Alwyn Myburgh and Pieter de Villiers. Janice Joseph who skipped 100m sprint to focus on the long jump, put her best foot forward in the women's event. She won with a distance of 6.79m.
Chris Harmse who's missed a couple of major meeting because the men's hammer throw is normally reserved for a Sunday, was more than happy with his performance in his final. He too won gold with a throw of just over 76m.
To wrap up the day, our wheelchair basketball team imposed their strength and technically knowledge of the game when they played hosts Algeria in the final. They beat their hosts 62-50 and now head to their paralympic qualifiers in Casablanca next weekend with a lot of confidence.
