Netball South Africa (NSA) has dropped its controversial quota system. It will not be applied when the 2007 World Championships squad is selected in Pretoria later this month.
The complicated and confusing system stated that at all times, the ratio between white players and players of colour should be 5:2, either way. Dropping the system will make life easier for the coaching department, still in the hands of Burta de Kock and Hazel Gumede.
Times have been tough for the Proteas, with recent dismal performances against Fiji, England and Malawi.
Blanche de la Guerre, the NSA vice president, says they have decided that a merit tournament will be held later this month, where the country's best players were invited to. De la Guerre says each region was invited to send their best players to this tournament, where selectors will select best players and that is a top priority. The entire management and coaches will remain until after the World Cup.
South Africa are hoping to host Malawi and Trinidad and Tobago, before the World Championships in New Zealand in November.
