Shaun Pollock announced his intentions in the Indian Premier League, when he led the Mumbai Indians to a 29 run win over log leaders, the Delhi Daredevils. Pollock rescued his side with the bat before going on to lead a blistering attack with two wickets for 16 runs.
Sanath Jayasuriya and then Dominic Thornely had got the Mumbai Indians off to a useful start, smashing the Daredevils before Jayasuriya finally went for 34 and Thornely 31. The Mumbai team faced a collapse, Yo Mahesh being the pick of the Delhi bowlers with three for 33. Pollock managed to steer the Mumbai Indians innings towards a respectable 162 for 8.
Three sixes by Polly off the penultimate over gave Mumbai, the most expensive team in the league, a chance to redeem themselves with the ball. Pollock then struck early, claiming the wicket of Shikhar Dhawan.
Pollock, relishing his role as captain, then took Malik's wicket for 24. With Delhi faltering Ashiah Nehra took two wickets in a row to leave the Daredevils on 130 for 8. The Mumbai Bowlers set the pitch alight with wicket after wicket, Dhawai Kulkarni claimed the scalp of Mohammad Asif for a duck and then Glenn McGrath, another duck, Delhi were all out for 133.
The win moves the Mumbai Indians off the bottom of the log.
