More boxers are being suspended because of positive dope tests

October 20, 2004, 13:30
Boxing South Africa (BSA), will set up a disciplinary enquiry made up of a lawyer and doctor, who is also a drug specialist to guide them on how they can deal with the recent dope scandals that has rocked the sport.
Boxing in South Africa is faced with a major problem, as more and more boxers are being suspended because of positive dope tests. The banned substances found in urine samples recently range from recreational drugs to steroids. Krish Naidoo of BSA says the enquiry will assist them in guiding the appropriate sentences to be handed out to those found guilty.
Vusi Malinga has been stripped of his title and suspended for two years. A one year suspension was imposed on his brother Patrick. They were were found guilty of using banned substances. Naidoo says Boxing South Africa is working hard to stamp out this problem. Nqubela Gwazela, the South African flyweight champion, will appear before the disciplinary committee for an alleged use of a banned substance. If found guilty Gwazela could be stripped of his title and be suspended from boxing.
