Special Assignment is celebrating ten years of broadcasting excellence. To mark this milestone we take a nostalgic look at the very first program which aired on 28 July 1998.

The program uncovers and exposes ruthless South African arms smugglers who supplied guns to the Sudanese Peoples Liberation Army. Incredibly ten years later Sudan’s North-South conflict is far from over, with the UN Security Council bringing charges against Sudan’s beleaguered president for genocide.

Special Assignment’s inaugural investigation still has relevance today.

The story also features Special Assignment founder, Max du Preez as presenter. It was produced by Jacques Pauw and cameraman Jan de Klerk who went on to produce a string of award winning documentaries.
