Peak Oil is the point in time when the maximum rate global petrol production is reached, after which it begins to run out.Like the rest of the world, South African is dangerously dependent on oil, a declining resource. But until now, the debate about the pending energy crisis associated with peak oil has gone largely unnoticed by post-Apartheid South Africans, grappling with social problems and an electricity crisis.

As global oil production peaks and the oil price tips a hundred dollars as a barrel, predictions are that the cost of living will sky-rocket and this country will be less and less able to negotiate its share of global oil.

This film explains that dilemma and sounds alarm bells to a disbelieving public, represented by four Capetonians - Gunter, a farmer, Khaya, a taxi-driver, Sarah, a working mum and Thabani, a tour guide.

These four South Africans are bonded together by their dependence on fuel to live their lives and earn a living. And until asked the question, none of them realized how crucial oil was to their survival. Or that one day there may not be enough fuel to travel overseas, drink coffee from Brazil or even drive our cars.
