This Tuesday Special
Assignment tracks the unfolding tragedy in
Cape Town, where addiction to crystal
methamphetamine is spreading among teenagers
faster than anywhere else in the world.
Since our program on the
drug commonly know as tik last year, the
number of people seeking help has doubled.
Tik is behind the break-up of many families
and in some cases it’s even leading to
suicide. We spoke to a young schoolgirl who
told us that in her class, 40 out of the 45
pupils regularly smoke the drug, while more
and more young girls are being pushed into
prostitution to support their addiction. |

We meet Nabu
Cassiem, and her group of volunteers. They took up the
challenge of the drug epidemic and provide counselling and
support to recovering addicts. One of the women in the support
group, Rifqa Wort an ex-tik addict, tells her story. She can’t
remember anything of her past - not even giving birth to her
4-year-old daughter, Yusrah. Now she is trying to come to
terms what she missed out on, and to renew the relationship
with her daughter.
We also join a
dedicated team of crime fighters on a nine hour shift, as they
raid houses of known drug dealers and tik manufacturers.
Government has set up a multi-disciplinary task team to deal
with the crisis. But these good intentions to stem the tide
look inadequate as teenagers get hooked on a scale not seen
before. |
