"In the
name of my father"
|
|
This Tuesday Special
Assignment investigates the abuse and
exploitation taking place in certain
“private” homes for the elderly. Dotted
across the traditional white working class
areas of Cape Town are what seem to be
regular residential homes. Take a closer
look and they turn out to be “boarding
homes” for the elderly and the disabled.
It’s claimed that many of the poor people
living there are exploited for their
government pensions by operators who have
little interest in their wards. With very
few options left to them, these pensioners
live in squalor, neglected and lonely. |

We document one family’s
attempt to expose conditions in a home like
this. They say their father died an untimely
death, after weeks of neglect. Armed with a
hidden camera the son returns to the old age
home, determined to confront the authorities
with hard facts. We accompany him on his
quest and tell the story of this family’s
guilt and regret at not having been able to
save their father’s life. Their allegations
include neglect, malnutrition, the
withholding of medical help and extreme
physical and verbal abuse. Special
Assignment investigates.

“In the name of my
father” is a story of a hidden world where
the elderly have few choices left to them.
For many poor pensioners, it’s either one of
these “private” homes – or the streets. This
shocking documentary is directed by
Anneliese Burgess and was filmed by Brian
Uranovsky. |
