Religious leaders have called for a referendum to gauge public opinion on the bill
|
November 23, 2006, 18:15
Several religious leaders have called for a referendum to gauge public opinion on the controversial civil union bill. The call was made during public hearings on the bill held by Parliament's National Council of Provinces.
The bill has already been approved by the National Assembly and must be signed into law by the December 1 in order to comply with a constitutional court ruling. Seven days before it could become law, the bill continues to pit religious leaders and politicians against each other.
Erron Naidoo, a pastor from a His People’s Church, says same sex union cannot be considered equal to heterosexual marriage for the simple reason that homosexuals are unable to procreate and cannot contribute to the most vital requirement of civilisation, which is children.
On the other hand, Donna Vos, of the Circle of the African Moon, says they are totally in support of the Civil Union Act.
Homosexual community may have its day
It appears the homosexual community will have its day in the end. At least judging by comments made by those representing the ruling party.
Tsietsi Tolo, an ANC MP, says: "While you must listen to the voters, you must also lead them in other situations and in this case they believe they are leading the voters." A pastor, however, is of the opinion that Tolo is, in this case, leading the voters astray.
On Monday, the committee will debate the merits and demerits of the submissions and the bill itself before taking it to the second chamber of Parliament for voting.
