Farmers meet to discuss land tax and minumum wages

Urgent issues affecting South African agriculture are to be discussed at Grain South Africa's fifth annual congress, which has begun at Nampo Park, outside Bothaville, in the Free State.

The issues include minimum wages for farm workers, land tax, security on farms, resettlement and regional food shortages. One of the keynote speakers at the congress is Cameron Hume, the US ambassador to South Africa.

He will update delegates about the current international situation. Mike Sackett, the deputy regional director of the United Nations World Food Programme in southern Africa, will speak about the food situation in the region.
