Farmers troubled by threats of global warming

November 12, 2007, 10:00

Northern Cape organic red meat producers have called for research into global warming and its effects. The Orange River Agricultural union says it needs information to adequately deal with the effects of the phenomenon.

There is consensus among scientists that Africa, and specifically the Northern Cape, will be hard hit by global warming. However the province's farmers say they find it difficult to prepare because of insufficient research.

The Agriculture Department says parts of the province - like the Siyanda district - are already affected. The union's chairperson, Hofmeyr Joubert says current farming patterns need to be changed because of the global warming threat.
