Napwa criticises latest Aids stats

Stats SA figures says SA has one million fewer HIV/Aids cases than previous estimates

The National Association of People Living with Aids (Napwa) has criticised seemingly contradictory Aids statistics released by Stats SA and the UN. Stats SA earlier released figures which implied that South Africa had one million fewer HIV/Aids cases than previous estimates.

Stats SA says 3.8 million South Africans are HIV positive, compared to five million cases estimated by bodies such as the UN.

Thanduxolo Doro, a Napwa spokesperson, says people living with Aids in South Africa are not interested in surveys, but rather in obtaining anti-retrovirals. Doro says his organisation will interact with government to ensure that there is enough money to provide the medicine to patients.
