The KwaZulu-Natal health department has denied that there is an outbreak of klebsiella at Durban's Prince Mshiyeni Hospital, the Mercury newspaper reported today. This comes after two babies, born at 28 and 30 weeks, died at the hospital on Friday.
In the provincial legislature yesterday, the department's chief operations officer Nhlanhla Nkosi said there was "inconclusive evidence" to suggest that the deaths were linked to klebsiella.
Nkosi said both babies had been born prematurely, had been in hospital for a prolonged period, and had received multiple antibiotics.
Another five babies died in the same ward some months ago, while two more were infected with the deadly bacteria.
Health MEC Peggy Nkonyeni said klebsiella outbreaks were a "continual threat" in the province. - Sapa
