Switzerland experts to help in Nestlé probe

Nestle's Lactogen 1

The baby formula is currently not suitable for consumption

March 13, 2008, 06:15

Food giant Nestlé has called in experts from Switzerland to investigate the exact cause of a mixing error in South Africa which has apparently contaminated infant milk, Lactogen 1. Medical specialists at Nestle say it is unlikely that the milk will cause harm to babies.

A batch has nevertheless been taken off the shelves after it was discovered that it contained high levels of zinc, iron, and copper. The Nestlé communications director, Theo Mxakwe, says they are consulting the factory which manufactures the formula for the company.

Nestlé says if a baby has consumed Lactogen 1, a doctor may have to be consulted. The recall milk formula has a batch code 73100179 L1 and it was manufactured on November 6, 2007 and distributed in South Africa, Botswana and Zambia.
