SA health department recalls defective condoms

September 18, 2007, 20:00

The health department has so far collected at least five million condoms from health centres and the public in a recall process.

Last month, it emerged that one of the companies contracted by the department had produced defective condoms. The government then instituted a recall process. Department spokesperson, Sibani Mngadi, says they are trying to regain the public's confidence.

“Although we have not quantified it, we believe that the perception about the Choice brand (government brand) has gone down. We are… (letting) people know that condom use is still very important and that they can still trust our brand because the majority of condoms produced comply with the required standard,” said Mngadi.
