Officials act swiftly to tighten hospital security

The Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, the world's largest hospital

August 03, 2007, 18:30

The health department says it will improve safety at all its health facilities after the rape of a medical student at the Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital. Nurses, doctors and health workers took to the streets in Soweto today following the rape.

The Wits medical student was allegedly raped in a secure area on the hospital grounds. Police have confirmed that she has laid a rape charge. Health workers say they cannot deliver an effective service in unsafe conditions.

Police will be deployed to secure the premises and additional private security will also help police. Wits University has appealed to the Gauteng health department to ensure students are safe during their internship.

Provincial health departments are responsible for providing safe and secure environments at hospitals.
