Good governance is key in dealing with HIV/Aids in SADC: Judge Cameron
|
December 05, 2006, 06:00
The Aids Rights Alliance for Southern Africa's (Arasa's) report on HIV/Aids and human rights in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region has found that 85% of people who are in need of anti-retrovirals (ARVs) do not get access to treatment.
Speaking at the launch in Johannesburg, Edwin Cameron, a judge, said good governance was key in dealing with HIV/Aids in the SADC region.
He said where there were human rights abuses, Aids could not be properly dealt with. The report is an evaluation of the steps taken by countries in the SADC region to implement international guidelines on HIV/Aids and human rights.
Cameron says the report shows that the response to HIV/Aids in the region has been less than effective. He says human rights abuses hamper the implementation of treatment of HIV/Aids. - Sapa
