Horse breeders in the Robertson area of the Western Cape say there is no reason for panic following the death of a horse about two weeks ago due to suspected African horse sickness.
Johan Loftus, the general manager of the Alchemy Stud farm, says they are, however, taking precautionary measures by checking their breeds about three times a day for any signs of illness. Loftus says although they are concerned, it has not been proved that the horse on a neighbouring farm died from the disease.
The area has been placed under quarantine and tests are being conducted to determine the exact cause of death of the horse.
Cobus Dowry, the Western Cape minister of agriculture, says negotiations with the European Union to resume exports following a two year ban, due to the virus, are at an advanced stage.
