A number of areas in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands have been devastated by heavy rains and strong winds. The areas affected are Greytown, Pietermaritzburg, Nkandla and Ulundi. Houses, roads and bridges have been damaged by the over night rains.
In Pietermaritzburg, Thabani Zulu, a city manager, says communities living on flood plains as well as people living in informal settlements are the worst affected.
In Nkandla, S'khumbuzo Dlamini, the area's mayor, says crops and homesteads have been destroyed, while Patros Ngubane, a Greytown mayor, says an assessment of the damage in his area is being conducted.
