Cycads poachers busted
|
November 19, 2000, 20:00
Three Gauteng men have been arrested in the Eastern Cape after police and nature conservation authorities stopped a truck containing highly endangered cycads with a black market value of R350 000.
The mountains of the Eastern Cape are being systematically stripped of their pre-historic cycads.
Nature conservation authorities and police in the province are waging an ongoing war against poachers.
The truck was stopped between Graff Reinet and Jansenville. Inside, police found 89 cycads as well as three elephant foot plant and three mountain tortoises
Cycads are older than the dinosaurs and fetch huge prices when poached from the wild.
