Foreign nationals at the Lindela repatriation center
|
July 25, 2008, 06:00
Scores of foreign nationals have spent the second night sleeping next to the R28 in Krugersdorp, West of Johannesburg. The Mogale City Municipality says it has done all it can to try and assist the foreign nationals.
They were released from the Lindela Repatriation Centre on the West Rand on Wednesday after it was found that their documents were valid. The Municipality had arranged buses to transport the foreigners to a temporary shelter in Randfontein.
But the displaced foreign nationals refused to move saying they want to be taken out of South Africa. Officials then withdrew the buses as well as plans to transport and transfer the displaced foreign nationals to the new refugee camp in Randfontein.
'Lindela not suitable for habitation'
Mogale City Municipal Manager, Dan Mashitisho said the foreign nationals basically said the place where they are is not suitable for human habitation. They say it is a dangerous area.
"They are inconveniencing other citizens here as well, there are businesses here, so that's why we wanted to take them to a place which is more hospitable, but when they are ready I think they must talk to us."
Matshitisho says they have been trying to persuade the foreign nationals for hours.
Earlier in the week hundreds were taken to Lindela after refusing to register with Home Affairs for the six month Identity Document (ID) card. Various Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) stepped in, helping with medical care and food.
