President Thabo Mbeki has committed the people of South Africa to carry on with former president Nelson Mandela's legacy of uplifting the poor.
“As we join you Madiba to celebrate your 90th birthday, we undertake that we will do everything we can to continue to serve the masses of the people for whom you sacrificed so much.
“We commit ourselves always to strive to advance the goals to which you dedicated your life - the goals of a democratic, non-racial, non-sexist and prosperous SA. We will continue to work hard to eradicate the poverty that continues to afflict millions of our people.” Mbeki was speaking at Mandela's private party in Qunu, Eastern Cape. He also congratulated Mandela and his wife Graca Machel on their 10th wedding anniversary.
Also at the party was ANC president Jacob Zuma. He commended Madiba for providing hope for South Africans. Former Zambian president Kenneth Kaunda was among the guests that attended Madiba's birthday party.
The world's most famous activist turned 90 yesterday and celebrated his birthday with his friends and family today.
